One of the biggest advantages of playing online games on Nintendo Switch is the possibility of using the Cross-play function, which allows you to enjoy multiplayer with other platforms, such as Xbox One, PC, and even on cell phones. To play, the method varies from title to title, but you must have a registered Nintendo account, in addition to the console, of course. How to register with Nintendo?
Just having a Switch is not enough. You must have a registered Nintendo account in order to play online. Although the account is free, the online multiplayer will be charged a small fee of $20 per year.
Here is how you can register on Nintendo?
Step 1. Access Nintendo’s official website, Nintendo.com.
Step 2. Click on “Login / Create account” in the corner of the screen.
Step 3. On the next screen, click on the “Create Nintendo account”.
Step 4. Choose your age group, up to 12 years, or more than 12 years.
Step 5. On the next screen you have the option to fill in your complete details comprising of your name, DoB, password and how you would like to sign in, i.e., via Google, Twitter or Facebook, choose what you prefer, and at the end, click on “Confirm”.
The Nintendo account will be created and you must use the same data, login, and password, to enter your Nintendo Switch. With the account logged in there, we will give examples of two popular games that support Cross-play below.
How to join Minecraft Cross-play games?
You can see the active games in the Minecraft’s Friends tab and then, join sessions. As you navigate to this section, you can easily identify the games that can be joined across compatible platforms.
- From the main menu, select the ‘Play’ option.
- Press ‘RB’ to access to Friends tab on your Xbox One. Whereas for Nintendo Switch, you will have to press ‘R’ to access to Friends tab.
- Select an active game to join.
On Xbox One, games are going to be split between joinable friends and Realms, whereas on Nintendo Switch, the games will be sorted by Nintendo Switch friends, Xbox Live cross-platform friends, and realms.

How to play Cross-play with Minecraft?
Step 1. Open Minecraft on your Switch.
Step 2. In the initial menu, choose the option “Sign in with a Microsoft account”.
Step 3. In your computer’s browser, open the address displayed by the Switch and enter the code provided – you must be logged in to your Microsoft account on the computer and the code is always random.
Step 4. The connection confirmation will be displayed on the Switch, choose “Let’s play”.
From there, just play multiplayer on the console, interacting with PC and Xbox users.
